Davidson wins bronze at African Cycling Champs

ZIMBABWE cyclist Skye Davidson claimed the country’s first medal at the Confederation of African Cycling Road Championships in nine years after winning the bronze medal in the junior women’s time trial race at in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, yesterday.

The 17-year-old Hellenic Academy student, who is also an accomplished triathlete, completed the 24 km stage in 0:46:50 minutes to take bronze.

The win saw her emulating her mother Linda Davidson, who was the last Zimbabwean to win a medal at the continental championships held in Mauritius in 2006.

South Africa’s Frances du Toit won the bronze medal after stopping the clock at 0:44:13 minutes while her compatriot Lynette Benson after completing the stage in 0:45:53.

Another Zimbabwean triathlete cum cyclist Hen Mitchell narrowly missed out on a medal as she registered the fourth fastest time.

“This is huge for Zim cycling; it’s our first medal since 2006. She had a huge scare at the start with mechanical issues, but changed onto her spare bike and still did well.

“Another Zimbabwean girl Helen Mitchell also did very well and was very close behind,” said her father and coach, Wayne Davidson, told NewsDay Sport from South Africa yesterday.

Wayne explained why Skye had decided to take some off from triathlon to concentrate on road cycling.

“She decided to take some time off triathlon because of a lower leg injury, so turned to cycling — and has been on an International Cycling Union camp in Potchefstroom for the past six weeks preparing,” he said.

Zimbabwe is being represented by seven riders at the six-day continental championships which has attracted a host of competitors from 30 different African nations.
