Devotion: Acknowledge the progress you have made so far

Opinion & Analysis
A purposeful life aims at targets and set out goals. There’s a destination to be arrived at.

A purposeful life aims at targets and set out goals. There’s a destination to be arrived at.

The journey is broken down into quantifiable and attainable steps. Sometimes when you look at the bigger picture it appears you’re struggling and going nowhere.

The load to be cleared before finishing the task seems insurmountable and appears so insignificant to contributing to the completion of the task.

It’s like a drop in the ocean. However, acknowledging progress, no matter how minute it may appear is the tonic to accomplish the bigger picture. As you stare at the pending work, always recognise the achievements thus far.

Sometimes depression takes a toll on people of great destinies. They look at where they are and where they want to go and conclude that even if they were to live twice, the journey is impossible.

The world is full of people of great ambitions and dreams who surrendered because when they first embarked they realised it was a waste of time. It may be do discouraging like a chihuahua competing in a greyhound category.

Some feared they would become the laughing stock of the neighbourhood. “Aida kushamisira, we knew, we told him,” they will quip.

When you set your heart to accomplish anything, forget about the mob and don’t look back. You may falter and get discouraged on the way; always pick yourself up and move on. The man who invented the light bulb tried and failed many times but he encouraged himself with the positives derived. His name is Thomas A. Edison and he said, “I’ve just found 10 000 ways that won’t work.”

Don’t be negative; there are enough negative things out there.

Many times you’re making it and are on right track and no one tells you. Due to many factors including low self esteem, you may end up prematurely giving up. Pause and take stock and award yourself marks for the job done so far.

No matter how complicated or imposing the assignment looks, always acknowledge the part already covered and dealt with. This will give you energy to fight on. If you can make a dollar, surely you can make million dollars.

Laozi, the famous Chinese philosopher puts it this way, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Always use hindsight to appreciate that you have moved forward.

When you have started, stay focussed and aim for completion step by step. Jesus teaches in Luke 9:62, “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

In order to avoid being overwhelmed by the demands of work yet to be done, always celebrate achievements. Take yourself out and thank God for making it.

Make positive affirmations that you will finish the journey. You’re nearer the finish line than the starting line. After setting off, let your single goal be to bring back the trophy.

The children of Israel were always complaining to Moses that they were better off in Egypt than in the unwelcoming weather of the wilderness. Stuck between the Promised Land and Egyptian bondage, it appeared to them the familiar suffering of Egypt was better than not yet tasted joy of the Promised Land.

Pursuing a call from God may be confusing if you fail to stick to the promise and rather trust what you’re familiar with. Spirit of poverty and bondage will always try to persuade you and pull you back.

God always paints the bigger picture of where you’re going and who you will be. He may hint trials and tribulation.

Most certainly He won’t give you the finer details of the sleepless nights and the ridicule you will face lest you refuse the call from the outset.

Always, realise and acknowledge that you have left the past. While the children of Israel were murmuring in the wilderness they failed to acknowledge that at least they were no longer under the whip of taskmasters. Surely you should feel more secure in the scotching heat on the journey to freedom than eating onion and garlic in the house of bondage.

Worship and praise God that you’re 10 metres from bondage although you’re still 90 metres to the promise. Even though you’re not yet really there but you’re out of trouble.

Don’t you realise that you’re out of danger now and heading to safety?

Yes you’re still nursing the wounds but you’re heading to total healing and restoration.

Recognise the good that has happened and let it carry you on its wings to the next stage or phase of your life. You are going somewhere.
