The duo impressed at the Southern Region Cross championships in Malawi over the weekend and will now travel to the East on March 28.

Zimbabwe eventually won four medals with Chitate claiming the country’s only gold medal in the senior women category, while Constance Nyasango won a silver medal in the same category.

Mugomeri won another silver medal in the senior men category, while Conscious Hwenjere won a bronze medal in the junior men category. National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) president Tendai Tagara said they are sending only two athletes because of financial constraints.

“We agreed that we are sending only two athletes for the World Cross Country in China next month. We decided to choose the first man and woman who came first in their respective races and in this case Mugomeri and Chitate excelled,” he said.

“We would have liked Nyasango to be part of the squad, but we are facing financial challenges to send more athletes. I think the two are going to represent the country well.”
