THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has told Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) Commissioner-General Gershem Pasi not to meddle in salary issues as these were not under his purview.

In a statement yesterday, ZCTU secretary-general Japhet Moyo said his organisation was increasingly getting worried about individuals speaking about salary cuts and wage freeze at a time the majority of workers were pushing for a living wage.
“While we agree that the economic situation in the country is abnormal with 92% of the government revenue being channelled towards recurrent expenditure, we do not think that cutting salaries would remedy the situation,” Moyo said.
“The government must first get rid of thousands of ghost workers milking the Treasury. It is also public knowledge that heads of parastatals have massive benefits that are bleeding the State of millions of dollars annually.”
He added: “Such sincerity is questionable because we are aware that most of the top government officials are not paying their employees in their private companies”.
Moyo’s remarks came as top government officials, among them Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya and Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa, have of late called for a salary freeze to allow for economic recovery.
