Misihairabwi-Mushonga last week quit her post at the Welshman Ncube-led party following pressure from party members.

MDC spokesman Nhlanhla Dube last Friday said her resignation had inflicted a hard blow to the party’s reunification plans.

“The resignation is like a loss of a limb and it’s hard for the body to make the psychological adjustment to such a development and try to use say one hand when used to two,” Dube said.

He, however, said they would forge ahead without her.

“The negotiations for the unification were done and produced a roadmap which I think is not difficult or impossible for the leadership to implement,” he added. Dube could not be drawn to comment on the specific reasons that pushed Misihairabwi-Mushonga to resign.

“I haven’t set my eyes on the letter she wrote to the president (Welshman Ncube) so I’m not privy to the real reasons she cited for the resignation,” he said.

However, speculation within the party is high the resignation was a culmination of backbiting among the leaders and intense jostling for positions within the UMDC.

Misihairabwi-Mushonga was not reachable for comment.

An insider said: “The party can only have one person taking over the secretary-general position in the new party as changes are high the president will come from Renewal Team hence the post was going to be a straight fight between Ncube and Misihairabwi-Mushonga.” The two MDC formations are expected to complete their unification process by August this year when they would hold an inaugural joint elective congress.
