A MAN who allegedly resisted arrest and axed a police officer after he was caught cutting firewood was brought to court last Friday facing assault charges.

Tawanda Simon Musara (32) from Waterfalls pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo.
Circumstances into the matter were that on 4 February this year, two police officers, Trymore Goliath and Adonia Dhliwayo, got a tip-off that Musara was illegally cutting firewood at Muguti Farm in the company of one Kudzai Zhanje, who is still at large.
The police officers allegedly ordered the suspects to load their firewood into their truck and drive to Harare Central Police Station. As they were along Charter Road, Musara allegedly told his accomplice to ignore police instructions and park the vehicle.
The court heard that Musara pulled out an axe which was under the firewood while his accomplice armed himself with a log.
Musara allegedly struck Dhliwayo once on the forehead with the axe as his co-accused also struck Goliath three times with a log.
The suspects then jumped into their car and sped off along Charter Road towards Harare-Masvingo Road.

However, they later got involved in an accident at Dunota Farm in Beatrice and fled, leaving their vehicle behind.
Dhliwayo was seriously injured and taken to Harare Central Hospital, while a police report was made at Gilstone Police.
On February 18, Musara was arrested in Glen Norah.
The court remanded him in custody to February 27 for sentence. Norman Koropi prosecuted.
