PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe yesterday appointed Prince Machaya to the post of Attorney-General of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

Machaya replaces Johannes Tomana who was recently sworn in as the new Prosecutor General in line with the new Constitution’s requirements that split the offices of Attorney-General into two separate offices.
Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Virginia Mabiza made the announcement in a letter to the Ministry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services.
“I write to advise that in terms of Section 114(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, His Excellency the President has appointed Prince Machaya to the post of Attorney-General of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” wrote Mabiza.
The Attorney-General is the chief government legal adviser and is an ex-officio member of both Cabinet and Parliament where he can contribute in debates but cannot vote.
“Machaya has been Deputy Attorney-General since December 2007 and his appointment to the post will see the expeditious alignment of legislation to the Constitution since this will be one of his core functions,” Mabiza said.
Machaya will be sworn in at a date and venue to be advised.
