A 24-YEAR-OLD Karoi man who broke into several shops in Chiedza high-density suburb stealing foodstuffs was yesterday sentenced to a five-year jail term.

Tinashe Chikonauswa was convicted on his own plea of guilty to 11 counts of unlawful entry and theft of groceries worth $993 at various shops between November 2014 and January 15 this year.
Karoi magistrate Nyaradzo Ringisayi, however, suspended 18 months of the sentence on condition Chikonauswa paid restitution by June 30 this year. That meant he would serve an effective prison term of three years and five months.
The court heard that Chikonauswa targeted items such as laundry soap, sugar, rice, cooking oil, airtime vouchers, bread and meat. Gilbert Dhamusi prosecuted.
