Govt moves to replace chiefs’ ‘outdated’ regalia

PLANS by government to dump the colonial-era regalia used by chiefs in favour of new apparel that reflects the country’s history have gathered momentum

PLANS by government to dump the colonial-era regalia used by chiefs in favour of new apparel that reflects the country’s history have gathered momentum with the Ministry of Local Government now courting clothing designers interested in designing the new attire to submit their details for consideration.

In a notice published in the public media yesterday, the ministry described the chiefs’ old regalia as outdated and detached from the country’s history, culture and traditions.

“It is, therefore, imperative to customise the chiefs’ regalia so that it speaks to our history, ethos, values and our aspirations as a people,” the notice read.

“At this stage, the ministry is requesting for expressions of interest from designers interested in becoming shortlisted to participate in the upcoming competitive procurement process.”

Currently, the chiefs use regalia that consists of a purple and red gown, white helmet with court of arms, breastplate with court of arms, name badge and walking stick with court of arms.

The traditional leaders recently confronted President Robert Mugabe demanding new vehicles, farms and an upward review of their allowances from $300 to $800 per month.
