AFRICAN Union (AU) Heads of States and ministers will in June meet in South Africa to discuss the infrastructural needs of the continent as they seek to spur economic growth and co-operation within the continent.

Foreign Affairs minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi said this yesterday soon after meeting African diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe at his Munhumutapa Offices to brief them on the outcomes of the recent AU Summit held in Ethiopia.
“There will be a summit in South Africa this June in pursuit of the Agenda 2063 policy where the leaders will discuss infrastructure development which include roads, railway lines, communication and energy,” Mumbengegwi said.
He said infrastructure development was critical as the continent seeks to spur economic growth and lessen its dependence on donors and the Western world for funding.
Mumbengegwi said energy needs for the continent could be solved by developing the Inga Dam power project.
The AU will also be grappling with disease control and terrorism activities that are blighting the continent’s image. Zimbabwe took over the leadership of the continental body for the next year giving the country the dual role of leading Sadc and the AU.
