ZIMBABWE’S leading amateur golfer Scott Vincent will headline a strong field of 80 players for the season-opening Dugmore and Fellowship Cup which tees off at Bulawayo Golf Club (BGC) on Saturday.
The United States-based golfer, who is currently in the country on holiday after an impressive season on the US college golf circuit, will feature in the first amateur tournament on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar.
The Fellowship Cup is 36-hole team stableford while the Dugmore Trophy is 72-hole individual strokeplay.
BGC captain Todd van Breda yesterday confirmed Vincent’s participation, saying they were expecting a strong field of local amateur golfers to participate in the competition.
“We are expecting to have 80 players taking part in the Dugmore and Fellowship Cup. Scott Vincent will be there. Thembelani Vundla, Justin Kirsten and Doctor Maphosa will also take part,” said Van Breda.
“The competition is very important because it is on the national calendar. It is the first major tournament of the year at BGC. We are expecting teams from clubs like Chapman, Wingate and BGC,” he said.
Van Breda said the participating players will be vying for ZGA Order of Merit points which will be used to determine the team to represent the country at the Zone VI Golf Championships in April.
“The Dugmore and Fellowship Cup is going to be held at BGC on Saturday and Sunday. It will feature top golfers as they will be playing for ZGA order of merit points. It is a chance for the players to make it into the Zone VI Golf Championships to be held in April.
“The Dugmore Trophy is 72-hole stroke play while the Fellowship Cup is 36-hole team stableford play while the Fellowship Cup is for officials who are accompanying golfers who are taking part in the Dugmore Trophy and committee members from different golf clubs,” he said.
Thirty-six holes will be played on Saturday for the Dugmore Trophy before the competition finishes with the same number of holes being played on Sunday while 18 holes will be played in the Fellowship Cup on Saturday with 18 set to be played on Sunday.
