The petition was crafted and presented to Mnangagwa’s office yesterday following an urgent meeting held in the capital.

“Health workers’ Apex Council appeal for the immediate dissolution of the Health Services Board and secretariat,” reads part of the letter.

“The Apex Council having met on the 9th January 2015 have unanimously resolved that with the gross inefficiency in the Health Services Board, Cabinet and the Acting President should immediately dissolve the Health Services Board and secretariat. Your action in this highly sensible matter will be greatly appreciated.”

The council represents nurses, doctors, pharmacists and laboratory scientists.

Of late, doctors have been up in arms with the HSB accusing board members of failing to protect their interests.

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association (ZHDA) yesterday also issued a statement attacking the HSB for betraying health personnel.

Part of the statement reads: “Since the bloated board was constituted several years ago, it has come along with teething and bureaucratic challenges that has seen it on the warpath with health professionals on a yearly basis.

“The letter to the Acting President is to bring to an end the chaos and confusion that the board brought to the health services as well as untold suffering to health professionals.”

Early this week, the ZHDA challenged HSB members to disclose their pay sheet showing bonuses they allegedly received last year.

The doctors also asked government to audit HSB accounts to find out how it disbursed funds received from the Health Transition Fund.
