The 45-year-old lustful father, from Grange Village in Penhalonga, was found guilty of attempted rape by Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiwundura and was sentenced to four years in prison.

He will, however, serve an effective three-year jail term after one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Brian Goto told the court that sometime in November last year, the man lost his temper when he saw his 17-year-old daughter in the company of her boyfriend and immediately assaulted her with an electricity cable all over the body prompting her to flee to the nearby bush.

The man later spotted her in the dark and demanded to have sex with her as punishment for hanging around with her boyfriend, but she screamed for help forcing him to let her go.

The daughter did not tell anyone of the attempted rape.

The court heard that he attempted to rape his daughter again on six different occasions in the month of November without success.

He then wrote a love letter to his daughter expressing his love for her and emphasising that she should not tell anyone about the issue.

The matter came to light when his wife intercepted the letter and quizzed her daughter about the affair.

The teenage girl then spilled the beans to her mother, leading to her father’s arrest.
