The 34-year-old Zimbabwean navigated his first 17 holes at the famous TPC Scottsdale course without a blemish on his card before surrendering a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole.

De Jonge, who is tied alongside seven other players, managed five birdies to finish just three shots behind the overnight leader, American Ryan Palmer, who carded a seven-under par 64.

While De Jonge was in good form, there was no joy for former world number one golfer Tiger Woods, who struggled with his short game again on his way to a disappointing two-over par 73.

De Jonge, who came very close to capturing a maiden PGA Tour title towards the end of last year, will be hoping for a good finish after finding the going tough in his first two events of the season.

The Harare-born golfer missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago before finishing in a tie for position 41 at last week’s Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.
