LOCAL entertainment website has been nominated for an award at the inaugural Social Media Awards Africa (SMAA).

The site, founded by Munyaradzi “Bloggo” Dodo, has been nominated for the best use of social media by a start-up category.

TV Yangu is a year-old video-driven website which boasts of a wide variety of content on their website as they have managed to secure it through crowd sourcing.

Some of the content found on the website includes the South African-based comic animation Noko Mashaba, Shuga a drama from Nigeria, Makosi Today, Invision Short films, music videos, Napstalk a web series by Star FM radio DJ Napster and the hilarious skits from PO.Box that have gone viral.

According to the SMAA website, the awards are meant to recognise and celebrate excellence, creativity in the use of social media tools and platforms by individuals and organisations.

Speaking in an interview with NewsDay, Bloggo said: “Voting started on Tuesday on the website and closed on November 28. The awards ceremony is billed to be hosted in Nigeria early next year.”

TV Yangu has done well this year as they won the Best Citizen Journalist Award at the last edition of the Shoko Festival Hub Unconference, walking away with $1 000.

“As TV Yangu, this is our stepping stone into the region and we intend to continue crowd sourcing for content that is appealing to a regional audience,” Bloggo said.

He said they were now keeping their fingers crossed as they hoped to get to the next stage pending the results of the voting.
