In a rare showdown, the audience will meet one-on-one with solo keyboard players as they show off their art and mastery of the instrument.

According to Richard Kohola, the founder and artistic director of the project, the Unity Day fete has been set aside for all music lovers to experience a different musical menu while at the same time getting an opportunity to view some of the latest keyboards in a mini keyboard display.

“This Jam brings some of Zimbabwe’s most-talked-about and respected keyboard players such as Philbert Marova,Owen Chimuka, Jairos Hamba Hamba, Nick Nare and a young crazy keyboardist Nigel Nyangombe who is destined to stamp his presence in the game,” Kohola said.

“Some of these keyboardists have shared the stage with the likes of Louis Mhlanga, Hugh Masekela and the late Dumisani Ngulube, among several other top names on the scene.

“Solo playing is an art that demonstrates one’s ability to wow the crowds using his or her skills techniques and generally stage presence without the limitations of other band members.”

Though the focus is on the keyboard players, the organisers said, some of them would be accompanied by either a drummer or a bassist of their choice.

“Initiatives such as the big solo jam have the potential to inspire and promote musicianship and professionalism as this gives individuals something to look forward to,” Kohola said.

Kohola hopes to run a series of solo concerts in the coming year.
