Mathew Rumani (28) from Zengeza 4 appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo on Monday facing a charge of fraud.

It was the State’s case that on November 14 this year, the complainant, Passmore Chiota, went to see the accused person over an issue of evil spirits which he said were tormenting him.

Chiota was made by the prophet to pay a sum of $7 000 with the agreement that he would be cleansed off the evil spirits.

The court heard that the complainant and Rumani embarked on a journey to Nyamaropa where the supposed cleansing was to take place.

Prosecutor Edmund Ndambakuwa told the court that Rumani left the complainant along Mutare Road and disappeared with his money before they reached their destination.

Chiota reported the matter to the police and the accused person was arrested on 16 November. Magistrate Murendo remanded him in custody to December 19.
