Mugabe under fire

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe crude attacks on Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s “simplicity” and her gender has a reduced all the gender equality progress the country has done since independence, academics said.

SENIOR REPORTER

Mugabe on Tuesday while addressing war veterans and service chiefs at the Zanu PF party headquarters attacked Mujuru’s ambition to succeed him calling her “simplistic” and undeserving to lead Zimbabwe.

Mugabe said: “Don’t fight for positions, it’s what destroys organisations. We are experiencing this in Zanu PF for the first time and it’s a woman for that matter who is saying I want to take over.”

A Zimbabwean scholar based at Rhodes University in South Africa, Admire Mare said Mugabe’s comments were unfortunate and shows leaders only talk of gender equality for political correctness sake.

“His views that women should not aspire to be at the top simply demonstrate that the rhetoric behind women empowerment in politics is a façade meant to woo women voters, but with little backing from the people at the top that women too can run this country,” Mare said.

He added: “Women have the right to aspire for higher positions if we are to live up to the dictates of gender equality.”

In the same address, Mugabe also said women will never be equal to men because of the payment of lobola by the bridegroom.

“I tell the women, as long as the man pays lobola, you cannot have equality with him,” Mugabe said.

Mare said the attack on equality even when it is contained in our new Constitution shows how deeply patriarchy was entrenched in Zimbabwe.

“Patriarchal views seem to pervade our politics despite constitutional clauses which seem to suggest we endeavour to be seen as a progressive society, its one step forward and nine steps back for women’s empowerment,” Mare said.

He added it shows how men view that women cannot break certain glass ceilings.

“It’s now all clear that our leaders believe there is a glass ceiling which cannot be broken by women politicians, they can be vice-presidents, but should never aspire to have a seat in the cockpit,” he added.

Other academics who preferred anonymity concurred with Mare saying it was surprising that Mugabe could make such a public statement when he was at the forefront of women emancipation after independence. “I think those comments were unfortunate coming from the President of the country who has championed the cause for women empowerment through legislation and educational reforms since 1980,” the academic said.

Mujuru has fallen out of favour with Mugabe since the ascendancy of First Lady Grace on the political scene. Since then she has been accused of plotting to ouster Mugabe from power.

  1. If Mujuru is simple minded according to you Mr Matibili, what about Grace Mugabe? She is a first class moron, that one. Did you not hear her speak on TV?

  2. Matibili a big woman hater.

Other people are enjoying their lives with money without even paying attention to these dirty politicians.. See how this poor Zimbabwean woman became a millionaire just by buying and selling cheap accidented vehicles. Very interesting. 3. Thats a 90 year old geriatric speaking rubbish. Sekuru vaakutaura zvavo semwana…

    1. The guy is enjoying his second childhood!

  4. How can we surely develop when we regard other genders lower than others? Its really a shame. But surprisingly if you check in the corporate world women who have made it to the top are fairing even better than man. Look at Grace Muradzikwa she is doing very well at NICOZ Diamond and yet we still regard women as inferior. Even Joice Mujuru i think she is the best person to lead this country because of her maturity and sense of oneness. The world has become a global village we need to embrace everyone for us to survive, which is a belief Joice Mujuru has contrary to Robert Mugabe’s belief that whites are to be regarded as unfriendly.

Lets have a different mindset Mr. President otherwise our country will be destined to death.

    1. through the bed

the things that these women did to get into such positions are unspeakable..

      1. you may have a point. but women end up doing the unspeakable things because it is not a level playing field out there

      2. what do you mean and where is your evidence?

  5. My take is that Mugabe used the refence to a woman so that his audience would know the person he was referring to without mentioning names. He never meant that women can not lead in my view. So in as much we have been complaining that the state media likes to quote Morgan out of context we should also do the same if it happens to bob.

Iyi ye lobola handina kuinzwa and the context was not stated.

    1. Saka kana usinakuinzwa just shut up.

    2. Saka kana usinakuzvinzwa urikutaurei…tikwanire

    3. Mugabe clearly stated that “it is a woman for that matter” wanting to be at the top. this statement is very clear, he does not view women as being capable to run the country unless of course if they carry the Margabage surname

      1. That does not change the point I am making. There are two persons vying for the zpf leadership. A male and a female. So in a bid to specify who he was referring to without mentioning names he used gender as the idwbtifier. Is that difficult to understand.

You will agree with me that at the security chiefs briefing mugabe never discussed the issue of gender equality particularly lobola and equality. So to tranket a statement made elsewhere and try to join to a statement that was clearly made as a descriptor is not only bad journalism but falling to the standards of state media.

You may hate mugaabe in as much as we do but you do not stoop that low to denograte him. In the past three months the private press was telling us that mugabe wanted to create a dynasty by ensuring that grace will succeed him. If mugabe has a low opinion about women the same should apply to grace.

    4. So what did he mean when he said Mujuru wanted to displace him and “she is a woman for that matter”? It seems to me the meaning is very clear because it means it would have been better of the person aspiring to lead was a man. He then brought in the issue of lobola.

  6. pliz can somebody help me! m not familiar with politics but I wonder if it is @ all correct to wear party regalia with the president’s face to Congress coz Congress is not about one man but about the party. if it was election time no problem but Congress!!! What happens when he is no longer around?

    1. You really are not familiar with politics. Go to school

      1. muza u r so stupid,u cant see sense in what gwengo said

    2. You wear regalia with that ugly guys face, otherwise you a gamatoxi.

      1. Tonera, it is called branding, a marketing concept and is used by organizations – profit making and non-profit making – political parties included. Services and products are branded for easy recognition and to stimulate customer preference etc I think that is also the concept being applied here, so that people easily identify their parties. Thanks.

    3. There is nothing new there go and check zpf regalia of the 1980s mugabe’s face has always been part and parcel of zpf symbols. You cannot have zpf regalia without mugabe’s face in zanu. This has nothing to do with factions but zpf branding. Whether that brabding makes sense in the future is their problem.

  7. Rubbish, when another lady was pouring scorn at VP Mujuru what did those academics say? When Mujuru poured scorn on the late Dr JOSHUA NKOMO, was she pouring scorn on a woman? These academics are slaves who are always trying to push the whiteman’s way of thinking as if they do not have their own brains. No wonder why some men get married to men on the basis of this skewed thinking. to hell with your gender theories. We have our own beautiful cultures to observe and preserve.

    1. Pssst… Wakey wakey. Our country is already destroyed! Don’t know how much more ‘destroyed’ it can get.

  9. Time will tell lets keep praying all will be fine especially for those not in positions of authority
    Ngatinamate

  10. If you leave everything to chance, everything will happen in either direction. Surely this could have been avoided and never seen the happenings of the day. People who are resourceful in wrong things wait for bad chances to surfaces so that they start to say this, to say that….. But hope is nay.

  11. I’m merely commenting as a non-political debate but as a Zimbabwean.

While the President could have used a better tactful approach I’m behind his implication.

The bible makes it categorically clear that ‘the head of the wife is the man’. The theory of parity or equality is thus Satanic. At congregations women when giving prayer, are supposed to dress their heads, according to the bible. The truth hurts, but the President’s tone, to me, should is food for thought. Nowhere in this world has women been reserved large quota for simply being women.

The Constitution was rushed to create an imbalance, which has divine origin. If we carefully analyse the divorce rate in Zimbabwe and be honest with ourselves, this is linked to the sudden change in redressing the perceived imbalance.

I would like to humbly urge the President, after the dust has settled I hope amicably, to address this issue of equality, for it to be reviewed when the next constitution review becomes due. Without a review, the stage is set for more women in Parliament than men, more women Cabinet ministers than men, more Public managers than men and more Presidium members than men and invariably it means statistically this country will end up being with more women Presidents than males.

Turning to the mai Mujuru saga, I appeal to the powers to carefully analyse the facts at hand. To try and discredit mai Mujuru ‘that she did not down helicopters’ comes too late for us to accept. Actually one of the fundamental that led to people having sympathetic views to cry for parity or equality was {i) in recognition of the role played by women at par with men’ as demonstrated by mai Mujuru who remains a national heroine. To argue that maiMujuru was trying to usurp power is not being Zimbabwean. Zimbabweans are a peace loving nation. We respect the President, we respect Rugare Gumbo and we respect mai Mujuru just as we respect Tsvangirayi in his endeavours to effect what he perceives as necessary change, in a democratic way.

  12. Mugabe meant to simply let his audience know who he was talking to without mentioning Mai Mujuru’s name…..As for the Lobola comments he was talking about inheritance issues……saying if a man paid Lobola and made a life with a woman in the city she was entitled to inherit their belongings of course…..however in the rural areas it would be impossible to inherit the cattle mudanga as there were brothers and uncles pa Musha and the mombes for her Lobola would have come from the family danga……anyway does gender equality mean women can’t be criticised? Too much sympathy from independent newspapers for Mujuu

  13. in saying this hogwash mugabe is trying to find what he thinks could be an acceptable reason for denegrating mujuru. a mentor who betrays his own protege???? but mujuru should have seen the deception that was always behind this man’s schemes

  14. Hehede! Now he is insulting ALL the women, Gire, Joy, Oppah and including the mad ululating ones who wear the clothes which show his face…MaZPF muchakaura. Achakutukai mese mudhara uyu. Mirai muone…

  15. if DrGrace comes on top @ the bedroom, what’s so difficult about V.P Mujuru coming on top @ the boardroom in parliament #justsaying

  16. Disturbing for a man whose firstborn is a girl.

  17. I think, we are missing the point. It is not so much the gender issue. The issue is the imminent challenge that Joyce Mujuru poised to depose RG Mugabe from the presidential seat. RG Mugabe will do anything where he is personally threatened to be removed from power. So, had it been a man or a woman he was going to throw scorn at whoever. It just happens that it is easier to to throw gender scorn under this circumstance. The congress in a democratic environment, is stage where the organisation appraises itself sincerely. Democratically it is harmless to challenge the sitting president a party congress. This is why Zanu-PF are forwarding the criminal element of the challenge. Did Zanu-PF bring democracy into this country? Well there is non Zanu-PF and indeed in the country. Let nobody fool you that there is democracy in Zanu-PF. That congress is a praise and worship of RG Mugabe and now also his wife.

  22. There is nothing like gender equality in the creation. You tell me man is equal to woman. There is nothing like that. This is the reason why we now have problems in broad daylight. It is because we have put women into positions they are not supposed to be.Women were only created to help men not lead them and they have their rightful and devine places (home and looking after the family which also includes the man).As man we were tasked to fend for our families,I mean SWEAT to get the food on the table for the whole family that includes the woman.Women have to cook, wash and iron clothes, entertain the man when he comes back home after sweating and to do the rest of the house quores.

  23. Gender equality ngaisa batirwe padenga vanhu we. Gender equality iyi irikuda kuti vakadzi vadye kwese chete chete. Mugabe ari right paanoti as long as murume achinzi abhadhare lobola then hapana equality imboripo.

  24. one thing Mugabe yet to reveal is that anyone who supports him is an idiot because he had never won an election since 2000,so is going to appoint his wife as deputy ,the same way he gave her a Phd without a thesis written, name roads after her .Ii took ages if not years for a single road and airport to be named Joshua Nkomo way but only over night to be Dr Grace Mugabe way.Why the same way not done in contracting Harare-Beitbridge road nxa

    1. Editor you should be ashamed of yourself, there’s no difference btwn you and Chief Mugabe, you are a dictator, you know what am talking about.

    2. Actually Mugabe never won a single election freely and fairly. In 1980 and 1985 Mugabe’s supporters prevented the late Joshua Nkomo from campaigning in Mashonaland. When Joshua Nkomo brought his complaint to the then Governor Lord Soams Mugabe responded that there was no way he was going to allow Nkomo to campaign in his backyard.

In 1990 Patrick Kombayi of Tekere’s ZUM was gunned down and almost died at the hands of CIO operatives Kizito Chivamba and Elias Kanengoni who were pardoned by Mugabe soon after being convicted for attempted murder. In 1995 Margaret Dongo proved rigging in Sunningdale and Vivian Mwashita’s “win” was reversed.

  27. If a leader can utter such words against women, it goes to show that Zim is not in sync with the latest world laws. No wonder why Zimbos are so backward and still backing the wrong horse.

    1. It is a misplaced statement that “Zimbabweans are backward” just because they have different opinions on different issues. Zimbabweans are backward, just that they have different views on given issues. Who are you to judge all Zimbabweans. Just put across your point without judging others.

  28. But vana Mai mahofa vaipururudza vachiudzwa kuti you will never be equal to men yet kana vaoenza voda kutinyepera hu Beiging. Mugabe is a sick jok just saw him now now on telly and seriously thei scountry is run by I don’t know what to say.

    1. I see Zanu PF coming from congress a stronger party than before. The incompetent, spanners in the machine cogs, are being kicked out. New mindset is being introduced. The President has also made it clear that the non-performers would be chucked out of the leadership positions. The recent vote of no confidences is also a clear communication to the new entrants. Based on this,i see a stronger Zanu PF winning the 2018 elections resoundingly.

  32. 303 isbhamu samabhunu

As long as we say “women should be AFFORDED equal opportunities” we acknowledge that the there is someone great than them who has that kind of power. if indeed we are equal we should let nature take its course, s/he who works harder will be rewarded through sweat and toil.

Women have every right to aspire to the top position just as young distinguished people – or anyone Zimbabwean who boasts the pedigree do.However THIS particular woman is corrupt to the core, just like old Matibili himself. Zanu -pf has never been a party of sincerity and whatever it finds fashionable to promote is usually an effort made for selfish gain.Zanu’s MO is that of keeping certain characters in power. Its unrelenting hold on power has little to do with true patriotism and a yearning for a better Zimbabwe.
