Man blames evil spirits for biting son (1)

A MUTARE man, who dipped his teeth on his one-year-old son’s cheeks and stomach inflicting serious injuries on the minor child before he also severely assaulted his wife while under the influence of alcohol, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail on his own plea of guilty to two counts of domestic violence and physical abuse.

Trust Marange (28) was initially sentenced to 24 months before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura set aside 12 months on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on December 13 this year, Marange arrived at his Marange homestead in Mendembe village under Chief Zimunya while drunk. In that drunken stupor, he lurched at his own son biting him on both cheeks, left side breast and the whole stomach.

He then picked up a wooden stick and beat up the toddler accusing him of disobedience.

Marange then turned to his 27-year-old wife, Linda Chapepa, and pummeled her with open hands and clenched fists.

In mitigation, Marange blamed all his troubles on beer and evil spirits. However, the magistrate rapped him for behaving like a wild animal, adding a custodial sentence would do justice in the matter.

Cuthbert Bhosha appeared for the State.
