THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has slammed police brutality after the members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police beat up demonstrators and a lawyer representing them in Harare on Thursday.

STAFF REPORTER

A lawyer with the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Kennedy Masiye was assaulted at Africa Unity Square in central Harare while attempting to represent his clients, Itai Dzamara and other protesters, who were being subjected to assault for staging a peaceful sit-in.

Dzamara was on Thrusday night reported to be in the intensive care unit at a private hospital in the capital

Masiye and Dzamara are detained at a private hospital for treatment.

In a statement yesterday, ZCTU said the police must ”not act like thugs”, condemning “in strongest terms such hooliganism by the police force” to defend.

“Zimbabweans are entitled to peaceful demonstrations and the action of the police shows that it has failed to reform and we are still in the dark ages as before the new Constitution where police officers acted with impunity,” ZCTU said.

“By attacking a lawyer who is on his professional duty, the ZRP has shown that it does not respect the laws of the country and more shockingly that they are above the law. If lawyers are unable to defend citizens’ rights because they fear police officers, then where would Zimbabwe turn to?”

ZLHR said it was deeply concerned at the continuing unlawful conduct of members of the ZRP and their failure to respect the rights of Zimbabwean citizens, including lawyers performing their professional duties.

“It is clear from such behaviour that the ZRP continues to disregard constitutional protections and regional and international safeguards that protect the rights and freedoms of individuals, as well as their lawyers,” it said.

“ZLHR intends to file complaints with all the relevant authorities and at all levels, and will take every step open to it to bring those responsible to account for such reprehensible conduct.”

  1. Do lawyer represent people’s rights on the streets or in courts? Was he conducting his duties as lawyer or was it a case of a lawyer taking part in a demo? Was the demo being conducted within the confines of the legal instruments applicable? Just wanna learn.

    • If you don’t know how lawyers operate shut up instead of asking silly questions. Even if they were demonstrating also is it not constitutionally allowed, where in the constitution does it say police should beat people who peacefully demonstrating? Leaving out people about to take guns and shoot each other at 4th street then go for peaceful demonstrators…….mbwende dzevanhu.

    • Tsiga, plis kwana, or tsiga like.your name says. Usangogwauta, we r educated zimbabweans, please read background info before u jus comment on things u know nothing about. What demo? Yes hes a lawyer and he had called to come and speak for his clients. Dont u watch tv? Have u never heard people.say on tv i wont speak til my lawyer arrives? Who said lawyers only act in court? God above, please.help Tsiga hes very lost…..thats y zim is in shambles coz u just watch and keep quiet.

  2. According to Thambolenyoka, a former dissident, about 116 armed men laid down their arms after the unity accord of 1987 between zapu and zanu. Over twenty thousand civilians were killed by zpf govt forces in search of just over one hundred armed men. They can only deal with unarmed civilians not the likes of Thambolenyoka, Gwesela, Indevuziyadabulamakomichi, Gaigusu (The Bush Grinder), Eskimo Wasi, etc.

  3. after 34 years of brutality from police and military forces, people become used or even supportive its becomes less awkward to hear words like ‘ngavarohwe’ ‘do lawyers represent clients in the streets’. I think itai is a hero for trying to exercise his freedom in a country which is selective on who gained independence in 1980 and who didn’t. Police are civil servants and not agents of oppression. People there is a better life than this.
Ask why do we still have the same ruler after 34 years, why is he so distant from the people, why does he praise violence and hate speach, why are we not free to say what we want without using aliases or nicknames, why are human rights lawyers beaten and lastly which human rights does our ruler see as right for us.

  4. When a Lawyer obstructs Police Officers from carrying out their duties like what Kennedy Masiye did, he must be punished. He must know his limits . If these guys are not checked, they’ll become a threat 2 national security. Well said @Tsiga.

    • @Asylum which nite school did you attend? You cant read ir simple things! U said well.said Tsiga, yet Tsiga hapana zvaataura?? Who obstructed police from doing their duty? What duty? Duty yekurova munhu akagara pasi asina kumbotaura nemunhu? First of all, he never obstructed police he came to represent his clients. Second police should be protected citizens, not beating them up. Musawawata about things u know nothing about.think before u write, why do u want to show the world how.stupid you are????

  5. I condemn this barbaric attack in the strongest possible terms. God destroyed the world in Noah’s day because of sin and violence. The whole world should take note and refuse to do business with ZPF until they repent and there is a huge change in the police force. The Commissioner must think about this when he goes to church on Sunday and reads his bible. may the justice of God come to Zimbabwe! I pray for those who have been hurt and I pray for repentance for those who are doing the dirty work of dirty politicians!

  6. Oh so police work is beating innocent citizens to death in the course of their duty. Itai has the guts to do the thing 14 million Zimbo’s are dying to do; show their utmost displeasure at a failed and oppressive regime. God is watching! I thought the freedom to ‘peacefully’ demonstrate is enshrined in our constitution???? I am sorry @asylum but your thinking is warped. I pray for a tidal wave of repentance to come to us Zimbabweans for we have surely lost the way; starting with the leaders who should know better!

  7. Well said Maid Marion, he has shown his bravery, unlike others who are good at talking and dont have the balls to act. Zimbabwe needs to be restored. We are gona die, ko vana vedu?? Vachadyei? By the time this stupid evil monster dies what will be left of the country?

  8. ZRP (Zimbabwe Rhodesia Police) is at it again. That is what they know and do best. Hapana kwatiri kuenda shuwa, ndinopika naamai vangu vaNhembedzeuchi.

  9. I blame my self for not participating. Let us unite for a common cause and sent this tyrant home. I want to be free, free form this regime, its doctrine and dogma, to be free to excersice my constituotional rights.

  10. ZRP is Zanu,so w will never b free in Zim as long they politicise Defence Forces,so play yo cards along Zanu if u want to live yo life.

  11. @candyfloss, let the lawyers represent their clients in court & not hinder the Police from carrying out their duties. Ko HuStupid hwangu hwabuda papi apa?

    • “”When a Lawyer obstructs Police Officers from carrying out their duties like what Kennedy Masiye did, he must be punished””

This shows u r very stupid. And u stil ask kuti hustupid hwapinda papi, u stil dont get it???????? Are u insane? Do u even know the story? Gees! Wen did he obstruct the police? Where do you get such garbage, i really wana know.

  13. It’s good to see normal service has been restored. Mugabe now back to his usual cruelty and brutality. Hope satan braais the dude nicely down there in Hell…

  14. These defeated british puppets think we are all idiots. And if properly beaten they wont pause for photos like that

  15. This is a sad episode. Noone is protected by zrp except zanu pf people. Look at all the demonstrations and violence done recently by zanu pf people and ask self if zpf beat one of them? Instead, they were protected them and in the event where violence occured, noone was arrested. In conclusion: zrp now stands for zanu pf republic police.

  16. Asylum,Tsiga and Tengenenge are police officers who were recruited at a ZanuPf Border Gezi rally. They can’t even read what the constitution says about freedom of expression. All they know is to protect and pepetuate dictatorship.

  17. pliz Zanu Rodhesian Police rovai madofo aya aende kuchikoro kundotsvaga dzidzo yepamusoro soro. isu tave nemaweek maviri tichiratidzira hatiroveke. our education is our shield

  20. Before I looked at the draft saying $8464 , I have faith …that…my friends brother was realey earning money parttime on their apple labtop. . there uncle started doing this 4 only about and recently took care of the dept on there appartment and got a gorgeous Lexus LS400 .

    more tips here,.,,,,, work4hour.cᵒm

  21. 1. This idiot was not killed, he is still alive

    2. He once claimed that military jets were flying all over Africa Unity square because Mugabe was scared of him, and yet it was a fly past rehearsal for the opening of parliament. A sign that he is an attention seeking idiotic puppet.

    3. Its not Mugabe who beat him up, but its one of the civil paid public servants, empowered
by the constitution, which was voted for by the people, so as to enforce law and order.

    4. Finally that is what we call rule of law, if you go about trying to make a minority street coup, and provoke the majority of the people who voted a Head of STATE into office, just because you are johnny got broke and now he sings for his supper, unodashurwa.
