SUNGURA musician Aleck Macheso’s son-in-law, Kudakwashe Munetsi, was yesterday convicted on a domestic violence charge and fined $200 for abusing his wife, Sharon.

Harare magistrate Tavonga Mtetwa ordered Munetsi (27) to pay the fine by November 17, failure of which he will spend four months behind bars.

The court also slapped him with a wholly suspended two–month sentence on condition that he did not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

In passing judgment, Mtetwa observed that the two brought out the worst in each and their situation was made worse by immaturity, lack of genuine love and extensive media attention.

He concurred with defence lawyer Charles Chikore that due to his age and the fact that he was a first offender, Munetsi deserved a second chance.

“The accused should learn from this that he must conduct himself honourably. Like everyone else, he deserves another chance. It’s evident that he is capable of reforming and will be given an opportunity to do so,” he said.

Chikore had appealed to the court to consider a non–custodial sentence because Munetsi would still have an obligation to look after the child that Sharon was expecting.

He also said the marriage was in “a sorry state from the onset” and the court should be sympathetic.

Prosecutor Gayton Vhiriri had, however, asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence because Munetsi had acted violently against a pregnant woman.

Munetsi was accused of domestic violence following a disagreement with his wife over honeymoon extravagance after the couple had exchanged nuptials during a colourful ceremony in August this year.

Vhiriri told the court Munetsi beat up his wife on October 12 and blamed himself and the complainant for extravagant spending and for renovations being instituted at their Chitungwiza home which they received from Macheso as a wedding gift.

Munetsi told Sharon that his father should have bought him a sports car, but Sharon advised him to find a job and not rely on her father to support them.

He then ordered Sharon to pack up and vacate the house before threatening her with unspecified action and told her that he would fix her by disclosing Macheso family secrets to the media. He then manhandled and assaulted her.
