THE Harare International Conference Centre will tonight reverberate to the sound of Jah Prayzah and Soul Jah Love as they perform at the inaugural edition of the Hair Show.

The strange “bed fellows” both spot dreadlocks hence their involvement at the Hair Show — an initiative of veteran cosmetologist Kuda Mupawose.

Mupawose has enlisted the services of veteran television personality Lindiwe Majoni and Star FM presenter Napoleon “Napster” Nyanhi.

The charismatic broadcasters will be the directors of ceremony in a development that will raise the appeal of the event.

Mupawose said the Hair Show was designed to celebrate and appreciate the creativity of hair dressers and acknowledge their contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

She said the hair industry is stereotyped as a profession for academic failures, but it has generated income and the practitioners deserve respect.

The event affords the hair industry and its consumers a platform to discuss, connect, educate and display their brands and talent.

It is also designed to show the role of the hair industry in strategic areas such as job creation and poverty alleviation.

Tonight, 20 finalists will be competing for the coveted prize of a car and a trip to South Africa for training.

Each finalist will showcase his/her creativity and will have three models.

The preliminary round was held last month at the Harare Gardens and only 20 stylists made it to the grand finale which is on tonight.

“There was an overwhelming response from practitioners in the hair industry, but unfortunately we only needed 20 finalists,” said one of the organisers.

“Tomorrow (tonight) we will witness who walks away the winner. We believe this is not a competition, but a mission to champion the growth of the hair industry.

“The industry’s potential has been underestimated yet it rakes in a lot of revenue.”

Tickets for the show are being sold at $5.
