Only athletes with potential to qualify for the prestigious tournament are enrolled at the high performance centre that attracts various athletes from the Southern Africa region.

Mahachi (17), who specialises in the 100m and 200m categories, is also part of team that is set to represent the country at the African Union Sports Region Under-20 Youth games set to be hosted by the country in Bulawayo starting early next month.

NAAZ president Tendai Tagara said Mahachi was enrolled at the high performance centre because she has the potential to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.

“I am happy because we have secured a two-year scholarship for Tsitsi Mahachi at International Association Athletics Federations in Mauritius where she would also be pursuing her studies. We are hoping that she is going to qualify for the Olympics,” he said.

“She is one of the talented sprinters we have in the country and she will be specialising in the 100m and 200m categories respectively and she will be leaving the country after the Africa Union games.

“We are hoping to send many athletes in the upcoming Olympics and we hope to get two or three scholarship for those with potential to qualify for Rio 2016,” he added.
