Shabanie win Midlands derby

SHABHANIE MINE did themselves a huge favour in their fight against relegation with a vital win over provincial rivals Chapungu at Maglas Stadium yesterday.
Xolani Ncube’s second half goal decorated the event and sealed the victory for the Jairos Tapera-coached side.

The win propels the Chinda Boys to 29 points the same number of points as Chapungu with five games of the season to play.

Before the derby, mania gripped the mining town of Zvishavane with some pre-match shenanigans going out of hand, the notable incident being when Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino verbally assaulted Shabanie Mine secretary-general Pithius Shoko.

After the match, Tapera conceded that it was a tough match.

“It was a tough match considering that we are both fighting relegation and winning a game like this is wonderful,” Tapera said.

On the other hand, Nyikadzino said: “It was a tough match, but a draw could have been a fair result.”

The hosts dominated the early exchanges with veteran midfielder Rowan Nenzou pulling the strings in midfield.

After 14 minutes of action, Carlos Mesi shrugged off the challenge of Blessing Zabula, but could not beat a badly exposed Roy Mazingi in goal for the airmen who pushed his effort wide.

Ten minutes later, Nenzou controlled the ball well outside the box but his effort was wide.

Moments later, Chapungu defender Blessing Mbavarira’s reckless lunge on Nenzou prematurely ended the veteran midfielder’s afternoon and was replaced by Marvelous Dikinya before Ngonidzashe Murisa’s beautifully taken shot was pushed over by Victor Twaliki, in goals for Shabanie.

Ten minutes into the second half, Dikinya pushed the ball into the path of Ncube after a brilliant solo run from his own half, leaving the latter with an easiest task of tapping the ball beyond the reach of a stretched Mazingi.

At the Colliery, How Mine stunned hosts Hwange 1-2.
