The party leadership said it would also take advantage of the tour to restructure its diaspora structures. Chairman of the party’s international relations and diaspora committee, Gorden Moyo told the MDC Renewal national working committee last week that the regional tour was meant to “apprise the region about the state of the economy in Zimbabwe”.

A team consisting of the leader of the guardian council Sekai Holland, chairman Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, secretary-general Tendai Biti, treasurer-general Elton Mangoma, Lucia Matibenga and Moyo will visit South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Angola and Malawi.

“The team hopes to apprise the region about the state of the economy in Zimbabwe,” Moyo said.

“More importantly, the regional leaders and regional institutions will be encouraged to press for the reforms identified by the Sadc and the AU [African Union] election observer missions in the July 2013 elections.”

He said the party’s structures in the Diaspora “have been advised to debate and contribute to the party’s social democracy ideological orientation, Pan-Africanist values, democratic developmental state aspirations, economic governance focus and pro-poor policies”.

This weekend, MDC Renewal structures in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada would be completing their restructuring programme, Moyo said.

He said at the end of the month they will hold an “Orange Weekend”, where all Diaspora structures shall hold rallies to conscientise members and host countries about the values and principles of the Renewal political programme.

Diaspora structures have also been urged to embrace the Welshman Ncube-led MDC as part of efforts to form a formidable grand coalition of opposition parties.
