The Roger Baylis-coached side lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites, with the four-member team claiming a seven shot victory in the team competition before Visitor Mapwanya was crowned the champion in the individual competition.

After resuming play on the final day with a comfortable eight shot lead, Zimbabwe, who led the eight nation tournament from start to finish, combined for a gross score of 223.

Although it was only the third best score of the day it took their total for the tournament to 13-over par 876, six shots better than hosts Zambia who came second on 19-over par 896.

Kenya were two shots behind the hosts with a gross of 898 while Namibia was a distant fourth after combining for a gross of 925.

Mapwanya was the star of the show for the Zimbabwe team carding solid rounds of 72, 74, 73 and 74 for a 72-hole strokeplay competition total of one-over par 293.

It was Mapwanya’s maiden regional title since making his national team debut at the Zone VI Golf Championship held in Cape Town in April, where he also won the longest drive competition.

Thembelani Vundla completed the country’s dominance at the regional competition after rallying back to claim second position on the individual after carding a solid round of two-under par 71 for a total of four-over par 296.

Kenya’s Nelson Simwa was in third position on five-over par 297. Having initially led the individual competition after the first two rounds after rounds of 72 and 73 team captain Tonderai Masunga struggled in final 36 holes carding 79 and 78 to finish tied for sixth position.
