Alex Mundiya (34) of Manyame Park, Chitungwiza, who had been accused of trying to extort the money from BancABC, was acquitted at the close of the State case.
Allegations against Mundiya were that he approached BancABC managing director Hashmon Matemera, claiming that his company was in possession of the bank’s highly confidential information which had been leaked by its employees.
The court also heard that Mundiya said the information contained in the documents related to more than 40 of BancABC’s valued clients and that disclosure to authorities like the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) would harm the bank and its clients.
It is further alleged that Mundiya told Matemera that the information in his custody reflected the liquidity status of some companies banking with BancABC and that information was not disclosed to Zimra to circumvent tax obligations.
Some of the companies mentioned included Marange Resources, DMC and Anjin.
Mundiya allegedly demanded payment of $82 200 to release documents to the bank before they reached Zimra.
