CAPS United yesterday launched their mobile application on Android, giving fans direct access to the Premiership football club wherever they are. The applicatin is the first of its kind by a local club, marking an exciting development in the club’s communication capabilities.

According to the developer Tinashe Kujoka, who demonstrated how the application works during the launch in Harare, the app gives fans first-hand access to a wide choice of club news, player profiles, statistics, training session and match updates — keeping them up to date with all things happening at the club.

“This is one way to get closer to our supporters. We will use the app to give all relevant information to our supporters. Information like player profiles, log table, fixtures, match day line-ups and club history – team news essentially,” said Kujoka.

To download the app on their Android compatible phones, the supporters will pay $1 for a year. Kujoka said the app has been on trial for a month now. He is convinced it would work efficiently.

“The main aim of this app is not to get revenue, but like I said to get in touch with our supporters. The revenue side is something that is secondary. This is something new and obviously we will improve as we go,” Kujoka added.

Caps United communications and media manager Joice Kapota said the supporters will pay the money to download the app through Econet’s Ecocash service. She added that services such as Paypal will also be considered in the near future for their international audience.

She also urged the corporates to use the platform to market their products. “Advertising on our platform will be free in the first two weeks and then companies will start to pay,” Kapota said.

The information will be updated as soon as it is released by the club, meaning subscribers are first to hear the latest news from their favourite team.

The news came as a relief not only to the United supporters, but also to the journalists who have in the past struggled to get critical material like team sheets. But Kapota said with this development, such information would be provided on the app a day before a match. Caps United host Highlanders at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, clearly the pick of the weekend league programme.

The match promises to be an interesting affair as the two teams are fighting to keep their position in the top four which comes with a reward of playing in the Mbada Diamonds Cup at the end of the season.

Caps United are currently on third with 42 points while Highlanders are three points behind, with Hwange lurking just behind on 38 points.
