MDC-T Manicaland provincial executive has ordered party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to apologise for presiding over a “sham” provincial poll

THE Shuah Mudiwa-led MDC-T Manicaland provincial executive has ordered party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to apologise for presiding over a “sham” provincial election last weekend and asked him to nullify the election results.

Mudiwa, whose executive walked out on Tsvangirai claiming massive rigging of the polls and has vowed to remain in office, on Saturday said Tsvangirai should swallow his pride and publicly apologise to disgruntled party members to prove that he was a real democrat.

The controversial elections ushered in a new executive led by David Chimhini.

Hundreds of MDC-T supporters on Saturday gathered in Mutare where they registered their displeasure over Tsvangirai’s conduct.

The meeting was addressed by senators Keresenzia Chabuka, Patrick Chitaka and Musikavanhu MP Prosper Mutseyami and several councillors in Mutare who, however, vowed to remain MDC-T members.

Through their spokesperson Godfrey Mubatsa, the disgruntled supporters said there was no democracy in the manner in which last week’s process was handled.

“We believe there was no democracy in the process. The rules of the game as provided for in the template were not followed,” Mubatsa said.

“It was clear that the intention by some senior officials doing jobs not meant for them and that there were specific interests and individual sacred cows to be protected at the national congress.

“We believe politics is about people and not money and other goodies. Therefore, if anyone enters into positions without the will of the people, then it is most likely that the province will be ungovernable.

“We believe the president was misled, but now he sees light and he has an obligation to deal with the issues democratically, constitutionally and politically to bring peace and joy to the oppressed people of Manicaland and Zimbabwe in general,” he said.

Party members said they were hurt when Tsvangirai declined to listen to their grievances and instead ordered them to join other opposition parties.

“How hurtful is it to be told in front of other supporters that we should go to Renewal Team or Zanu PF by the leader whom we sacrificed everything for? We remain loyal to him, but in the future, he should just zip up his mouth that’s destroying us by such responses. He should say sorry for such,” MDC-T activist Hilda Zimunya fumed.
