NATIONAL Rugby League (NRL) clubs, who have been starved of competitive action due to the inactivity in the local league, will have a chance to get some competitive match practice when they take part in the inaugural Chitungwiza Invitational Rugby Tournament on Saturday. SPORTS REPORTER

The tournament which will feature three NRL teams namely champions Old Hararians, Harare Sports Club and Mutare Sports Club, takes place at Zengeza High 1 School on Saturday.

Other participating teams include the hosts Southern City and Police Defenders from the second-tier Metro League as well as three ladies teams; Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians and Police Cubs.

Tournament director Brian Goredema said the event was organised not only to help NRL clubs get some competition, but was also meant to raise the sport’s popularity in Chitungwiza.

“Basically the reason for hosting the tournament was two-fold. Firstly, it was to give the NRL clubs an opportunity to play some competitive rugby as there has been no activity in the local league for some time now.

“The second and most important reason was to bring competitive rugby to Chitungwiza. We feel that not enough has been done to take rugby to new audiences and Chitungwiza is one such area despite the fact that almost all the top clubs such as Old Hararians and Harare Sports Club all have players from Chitungwiza,” said Goredema, who is also the team manager at Southern City.
