EASTERN Region Division One Football side Mutare City Rovers is closing in on Premiership promotion after registering a convincing 3-0 win against Renco Mine at Sakubva Stadium on Saturday.

They went for the oranges leading 2-0 goal after skipper Hebron Makukutu opened the floodgates before gangly striker Tapfumanei Gwereweshe poked home the second goal of the afternoon. Dribbling wizard Blessing Mwamuka, who this season has been playing in unfamiliar role upfront, added another sucker punch after the breather.

With nine matches before the league’s season curtain comes down, they are at the summit of the log standings with 48 points.

At the moment, it seems the season is heading for a photo finish with another Mutare-based outfit side Buffalo Junior just two points off the pace.

Buffalo Junior are on second position with 46 points after being awarded three points from their scheduled Gaza Gunners match during the weekend.

Both Mutare City and Buffalo Junior will clash in the reverse fixture later in the season in a derby expected to be the title decider.

However, Mutare City Rovers team manager Lyndon Kanyemba said they were taking each game as it came, but believes they are going to be promoted this season.

“I am happy with the performance of my team. I believe this is going to be our year. Last season we came second to Hippo Valley, so we now have experience and we know how to do the business this time around,” he said.

“We just need to take each game as it comes because we also believe we are the team to beat at the moment and there is no need to underrate our opponents, even a team that is it at the bottom.
