Motorist drives off with cop on bonnet

A GWERU motorist, Tapiwa Mumvana, who allegedly drove off at high speed with a cop hanging on the bonnet of his car in an attempt to escape arrest, yesterday appeared in court facing an attempted murder charge.

Mumvana (27), of Senga high-density suburb appeared before regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire.

The State alleges that on March 18 this year, the complainant, Tafara Tizai from Gweru Central Police Station, was on duty with a colleague when they approached Mumvana in a bid to arrest him for offloading passengers at an undesignated point.

To evade arrest, Mumvana allegedly reversed his car and knocked down Tizai’s service bicycle, forcing Tizai to jump onto the bonnet where he hung precariously to avoid being run over by the car.

Mumvana then allegedly sped off movie style along Mvuma Road and off the traffic circle close to the showgrounds with the officer still clutching on the windscreen wipers. Tizai managed to switch off the ignition when the driver’s door opened, leading to Mumvana’s arrest.

Tizai sustained a swollen mouth during the ordeal.
The trial continues tomorrow.
