Mapeza set for Gibbo test

NEW FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza takes his charges to Gibbo Stadium this afternoon where they face Triangle in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match.

The Lowveld-based side last Saturday secured a berth in the One Wallet Cup final after beating Chicken Inn 5-3 on penalties after the match had ended nil-all in regulation time, to set up to a final against Dynamos.

But it is Triangle’s form in the country’s premier’s cup competitions that is interesting as they also booked a place in the last eight of the Chibuku Super Cup recently after defeating Hwange in their own backyard.

And the Biggie Zuze-coached side is proving to be penalty shootout specialists as they have won all their cup matches through the penalty lottery.

Although they are having good outings in cup matches, their performance in the league is not consistent and they are not safe from relegation.

They are in the bottom half of the log standings with 24 points from 21 matches with only nine matches remaining before the season curtain comes down.

In an interview with NewsDay Sport yesterday, Triangle chairman Lovemore Matikinyidze said he was confident of collecting maximum points.

“I know this is going to be a tough match for both teams. FC Platinum are a good side, but on our side we will be hoping to use home advantage.

“With our current form, we are surely going to get maximum points because we need to move up the ladder on the log table. And l believe after our win against Chicken Inn over the weekend, morale is good in our camp,” he said.

FC Platinum are no push-overs especially with their newly-appointed head coach Norman Mapeza in charge. Mapeza has so far presided over three matches at the helm of Moneybags, winning his first league match against Black Rhinos 1-0 and the Chibuku Super Cup triumph over Bantu Rovers.
