Constable Thulani Jasi (24) of ZRP Kadoma Police Main Camp was last Saturday beaten to pulp by 20-year-old Tichaona Makumbo after attempting to refrain him from making sexual advances to a married woman only identified as Mai Maka in State papers.

Makumbo of Plot 7 SPCA, Kadoma, on Monday appeared before magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba facing charges of assault.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to September 29 on free bail.

The State, led by Herbert Ngezimani, averred that on September 20 and at Waverley Shopping Centre at around 1930hrs, Makumbo was verbally attacking a butchery attendant when Jasi attended the scene before identifying himself as a police officer.

Jasi then told Makumbo to stop acting in the manner he was doing.

This did not go down well with Makumbo who then confronted Jasi before launching an attack on him, repeatedly punching him with clenched fists in the face. The State alleges that Jasi sustained a laceration on the mouth and injury on the right arm as a result of the bashing.

However, in his warned-and-cautioned statement recorded by police, Makumbo denies assaulting Jasi, but admits to pushing him, resulting in the policeman falling to the ground.
