THE Lovemore Madhuku-led National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) has sensationally attributed the break-in and theft that occurred at Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku’s office in Harare on Monday to Zanu PF factional fights.

NCA in a statement yesterday said it had received reliable information citing senior Zanu PF members as behind the alleged break-in where a computer and television set were stolen.
“Following reports of an alleged burglary at the office of Hon Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku, the NCA has received disturbing evidence that this is the work of Zanu PF,” NCA said.
It added: “Ugly succession politics in Zanu PF is embroiling the office of Chief Justice on the mistaken belief by some factional leaders that the office has a role to play in their succession battles.”
The NCA said it was disturbing that the alleged burglary had taken place in a highly-secured area which also houses other strategic and important State buildings like the government’s seat — Munhumutapa Building, the High Court Building, New Government Complex and the Civil Court.
The area is under 24-hour camera surveillance and is guarded by armed police officers.
NCA claimed: “It was the work of a Zanu PF faction controlling the police officers on duty, on the day of the purported burglary, who simply opened the Chief Justice’s offices. This is dangerous for the country.”

The party also insinuated that there were many senior Zanu PF members who had cases before the Constitutional Court who could have been tempted to destroy their records at the offices.
The NCA called on Zanu PF to “keep its succession madness out of State institutions”, adding that “police must not waste scarce resources over a clear issue. If they already know who did it, they should not pretend to be investigating anything.”
