RISING Chimurenga musician Jairos Chabvonga, who frontlines Ngorimba Afro Fusion Band, has inked a deal with local record label Diamond Studios to market and distribute his debut eight-track album Nevanji. WINSTONE ANTONIO
In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, the Chitungwiza- bred musician said he decided to engage the record label because of its better marketing and distribution network.
“I have decided to engage Diamond Studios to provide proper marketing and distribution of my debut album which has been the major setback for my music to reach to different parts of the country,” Chabvonga said.
“I am also going to be engaging more renowned musicians for ideas that will help me take my music career to greater heights.” Diamond Studios artistes and marketing manager John Muroyi confirmed to NewsDay about the developments.
“We have signed a deal with Jairos Chabvonga that will see us marketing and distributing his album Nevanji,” Muroyi said.
Chabvonga said he ventured into music with effort to fill in the gap left by Chimurenga guru Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo.
“With Chimurenga music, I want to remind people about the importance of identity and cultural values through singing,” he said.
“For many, Chimurenga means war, but as for me I am fighting the war for cultural revival and self-identity through music which is laden with social commentary message that relates to our culture.”

The album Nevanji, which was recorded at Revival Studios in the capital, is a fusion of traditional instruments like mbira and drums.
It has tracks KuZimbabwe, Dongo, Botso, Maidei, Donhodzo, Magumo Enyika, Mombe Yehumai and Tovatenda Masoja making up the album.
