THERE was a goal drought for Zimbabwean footballers who play in major leagues outside the country over the weekend with former Highlanders striker Cleopas Dube the only player to register his name on the score sheet. Zimbabweans Abroad with Henry Mhara

Dube scored on his debut for his South African National First Division side Witbank Spurs, but the goal was not enough for his team which lost the match 2-1 to Highlands Park.

Zimbos leading strikers in the South African Premiership this week all fired blanks with Cuthbert Malajila, the scorer of a brace last week, failing to find the target.

However, he provided an assist for Elias Pelembe as Mamelodi Sundowns edged Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 to leap frog to position five on the log table.

Kingston Nkhatha played 87 minutes for Kaizer Chiefs in their 2-1 win over Pretoria University as the Soweto giants maintained a 100% start to the season in six matches. But just like Malajila, Nkhatha could only provide an assist for the second goal for double scorer Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

Willard Katsande played the entire match for Chiefs and for Pretoria University, Washington Arubi saved well a point blank shot from Nkhatha early in the match, but there was nothing he could do for Letsholonyane’s goals.

Partson Jaure played the full match, while Denver Mukamba was an unused substitute for AmaTuks.

Matthew Rusike played his first competitive match since his injury last season as he was part of the Kaizer Chiefs reserves side which beat their Maritzburg United counterparts in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge match on Saturday.

According to Chiefs, the Warriors player has been doing well in training, working hard to regain full fitness after sustaining a knee injury towards the end of last season.

There was a strong representation of Zimbabwean players in the match between Maritzburg United and Mpumalanga Black Aces on Saturday with five players on the starting line-up for the match that ended goalless.

The home side had Khumbulani Banda and Terrance Mandaza who were both substitutes in the second half. Aces had Energy Murambadoro in goals, Tinashe Nengomasha in midfield and Tendai Ndoro who was pulled out just after the hour mark.

George Chigova is yet to make his debut for SuperSport United since moving from Dynamos this year and was again on the bench for the team which beat Platinum Stars 3-1 as he continues to play second fiddle to first choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

It was a weekend to forget for AmaZulu for the Zimbos-AmaZulu trio of Tapuwa Kapini, Carlington Nyadombo and assistant coach Wilfred Mugeyi as their team is the only one which are yet to record a win in the Absa Premiership this season following their 2-2 draw against Polokwane City over the weekend.

It was even more terrible for Nyadombo who missed a penalty which could have secured three points for his side.

After six rounds of league matches, AmaZulu find themselves with the distinction of being the only team in the top-flight that is yet to win a match.

AmaZulu are bottom of the log with 3 points — 15 behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

Onismor Bhasera was part of Bidvest Wits University team which lost 1-0 away to Orlando Pirates with the Warriors defender playing the entire match and earning himself a yellow card.

Costa Nhamoinesu was part of the Sparta Praha side which earned a goalless draw away to Teplice to move level on points with log leaders Viktoria Plzeň who, however, have a game in hand.

It was a dress rehearsal for Praha who travel to Rafael Benitez’s Napoli in the Europa League match on Thursday.

Silas Songani and Quincy Antipas were expected to face each other as their sides Sonderjske and Hobro were set to clash last night in Denmark.
