MDC-T provincial structures in Matabeleland provinces have resisted the opposition party’s proposals to create a second vice-president’s post, describing it as a waste of resources.

Party spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora confirmed the development yesterday from Gwanda where the senior MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his top executives were holding consultative meetings with grassroots structures on proposed constitutional amendments to be tabled at congress in October.
The party leadership has already adressed provincial structures in Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo.
“It’s too early to say, but so far there are two distinct debates, for example, on the office of the second vice president. There appear to be serious resistance on that one because they don’t think it advances anything,” Mwonzora said.
He added that the party supporters were also of the view that the secretary-general’s post should be re-organised.
“We are yet to know of other provinces, but definitely the feeling is the secretary-general who is number five in the party hierarchy should have its powers and functions realigned as currently it has been generally vague, thus creating unnecessary schisms in the party,” he added.
Mwonzora added that the MDC-T wanted to capitalise on Zanu PF infighting to regroup and retain its lost ground in 2018.
