According to police, Bright Chawatama drank cyanide at his residence in Makwasha after hearing that police were after him for attempting to kill Leticia Maname and her friend Mary Phillips.

Chawatama had been involved in a misunderstanding with Maname whom he accused of fleecing and cheating on him.

He invited Maname and her friend for a drink and allegedly spiked their soft drinks with cyanide in a bid to kill them.

Chawatama allegedly disappeared from the watering hole and left the two women to drink the poisoned drinks.

However, Maname and Phillips decided to instead buy themselves beer and emptied the soft drinks.

After some time, Chawatama, thinking that his plan had worked, sent Maname a text message, informing her that he had fixed her by poisoning their soft drinks with cyanide.

The two women then went to Zvishavane Police Station where they made a report.

Police detectives went to Chawatama’s residence, but were blocked by his younger brother from entering.

Upon spotting the police, Chawatama is said to have drunk about 100ml of cyanide

and by the time the cops forced their way into the house, he was already dead.

His body was taken to the Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said they were still investigating the matter.

“Police will carry on with investigations and establish concrete facts leading to the death of Chawatama,” Goko said.
