Godknows Muzenda from Unit D appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo facing charges of failing to pay maintenance as defined in Section 23 of the Maintenance Act.

Six months of his sentence were set aside on condition of good behaviour and another six months were suspended on condition that he pays all the arrears through the Chitungwiza Clerk of Court. Prosecutor Zuvarashe Mushayabasa told the court that on July 30 2012, the accused person was ordered by Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court to pay the sum of $120 to his wife Gertrude Mapako with effect from August 31 2012 for the upkeep of their minor child.

Muzenda defaulted in paying the money for 19 months from January 2013 to July 2014, resulting in arrears accruing to $2 280.

Mapako made a police report leading to Muzenda’s arrest.
