Makhalima left the country on Wednesday evening for a weeklong conference in Nigeria that ends on August 6 together with other members that were head-hunted from different African countries.

The all-African music awards are being organised in partnership with the African Union Commission and are a combined effort to promote African music worldwide.

Makhalima said: “The main ceremony will take place on November 9 in Nigeria showcasing Africa’s vast musical talent with over 32 awards categories.”

Makhalima is one of the pioneers of the urban music movement, which has contributed to the growth and development of music for young people in Africa.

He has worked with and produced a string of chart-topping artistes that include David Chifunyise, Willom Tight, Audius Mtawarira, Alexio Kawara, Zonke and Kudzai Sevenzo, among others. While in South Africa, he worked for Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music as an A&R executive, music producer and freelance songwriter.

He later joined SABC to be on Africa’s largest urban radio station Metro FM as a radio presenter and continuity station voice.

This saw Makhalima being recognised among the top radio DJs on the continent and going on to work with DJs Sbu, Christos, Glenn Lewis, Bonang, Phat Joe, Kenny Maistry, Unathi, TBo Touch, Oskido, the late Eddie Zondi and legendary Wilson B Nkosi.

“In 2012, I moved back home when I was asked by AB Communications to assist with the launching of the first independent radio station in Zimbabwe, ZiFM Stereo,” he said.

He was contracted head of production for the station where his department is responsible for the sound design of the radio station.
