Cara, Mirza off to a good start

CARA Black’s quest for a sixth Grand Slam women’s tennis doubles title got off to a smooth start on Wednesday at the US Open in New York as she and her partner Sania Mirza easily defeated the Czech Republic’s Pliskova twins, Karolina and Krystina, in straight sets.

Mirza is looking for a historic first Grand Slam women’s doubles title at this tournament.

The third-seeded Indo-Zimbabwean duo needed only 57 minutes to win 6-3, 6-0 and move into today’s second round where they will meet either Dominika Cibulkova/Mirjana Lucic-Baroni or Caroline Garcia/Monica Niculescu.

Despite six aces from the twins, Black and Mirza managed to convert 4 of 8 break point opportunities and also saved all the three break points they faced on their own serve.

This was the third meeting in the past month for the two teams with Sania and Cara winning the previous two encounters as well.

Black has won 5 Grand Slam doubles titles, including one US Open title, way back in 2008.

Mirza is looking to become the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam women’s doubles title, although she has won 2 mixed doubles Grand Slams.
