The four — Brian Kanengoni (23), Biggie Madzona (24), Noah Mashava (40) and Chave Mudenda (39) — were not asked to plead when they appeared before magistrate Makamera.
They were remanded in custody to September 10 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Brief circumstances into the matter are that on August 10 and at Darlington dumping site in Mutare, the quartet intercepted the now deceased who had allegedly stolen two motor vehicle tyres in Chikanga.
They then allegedly took the law into their own hands and began assaulting the now deceased several times using open hands, wooden logs, pots and wire all over his body.
As a result of the assault, the now deceased sustained serious head injuries and was admitted to Mutare Provincial Hospital on August 11.
He failed to recover and on August 18 succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.
