THE Africa Union Sport Council Region Five Under-20 Games will be officially launched at Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel this evening by Vice-President Joice Mujuru. SPORTS REPORTER
The Games will run from December 3-15 in the City of Kings and will comprise, among other sports, athletics, basketball, boxing, football, netball, judo and swimming.
Participating Region Five member countries are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Madagascar, Tanzania and Seychelles have also been invited for the Games bringing the total to 15.
Sports, Arts and Culture minister Andrew Langa, his deputy Tabetha Malinga-Kanengoni and permanent secretary Thokozile Chitepo will grace the event meant to raise awareness and publicity.
Senior Minister of State in the Office of the President Simon Khaya Moyo chairs a Cabinet committee that will oversee the successful hosting of the games.
The Games have already seen renovations starting at Barbourfields and Luveve Stadiums. Barbourfields is likely to host its last Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders and Dynamos next weekend before the full closure of the venues.
Highlanders are expected to move to Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane for their big games, although Hartsfield, which takes in about 6 000, is another alternative.
How Mine, Chicken Inn and Bantu Rovers, who have smaller support bases, will use Hartsfield.
