Organised in partnership with EdzaiIsu Theatre Arts Project, Let Them Trust and Chiedza Childcare Centre, the launch will be complemented by a talent show aimed at showcasing the artistic or creative talent of children at the centre before the launch of the single Nyarara by Singing Talent Amalgamated (STA), a Mufakose bred music outfit fronted by Mahubaba.

International Day of the African Child [June 16] was first established by the Organisation of African Unity [OAU] in 1991 in honour of participants of the Soweto Uprising in 1976 where 10 000 black schoolchildren marched in a column more than half a mile long protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language resulting in hundreds of young students being shot.

The event will afford children at Chiedza Childcare Centre an opportunity to showcase their talent sharing the stage with professionals who will be providing entertainment for them, creating an interactive platform among children, staff of the centre and guests.

Tafadzwa Muzondo, director of EdzaiIsu who is also Mahubaba’s husband, said the celebrations would run under the theme “A child friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa”.

“This will also afford an upcoming musician an opportunity to launch her single to children in commemoration of such a special day, thus lay a milestone for her career and passion in working with children from compromised backgrounds or in challenging situations,” said Muzondo.

“The single Nyarara is not just a song bemoaning negative sides of the life of an African child, but it has a positive message of hope and gives motive for a child in whatever situation with assurance that things would be alright. Nyarara is a word of comfort to the African child and we thought this would be a perfect launchpad.”

He showered praises at Chiedza Child Care for the sterling work they are doing.

“There is also the element of mobilising in kind support for the children in the form of stationery and books as all invited guests are expected to bring textbooks, exercise books and pens and hampers or other things in donations from corporates in line with the people’s spirit of abundance to share something special with a child in Africa which the day of the African child encourages,” said Muzondo.

STA started off as Afro-Divine Band which had Mahubaba as the lead vocalist with instrumentalists and other vocalists from her church in Mufakose.

EdzaiIsu is a community-based theatre enterprise founded by the versatile award-winning producer, director, playwright and actor Muzondo, who has produced several locally and internationally acclaimed plays and organised community events.
