Company director, Jenny Wall, said the new product came about following reports that the majority of underprivileged girls were using some unhealthy products due to the prohibitive cost of sanitary pads.

Addressing guests at the product launch in Harare last Thursday, Wall said her organisation had conducted independent surveys which revealed that 45% of girls used cloth, 19% use cotton wool, 18% could afford pads while the other 3% relied on newspapers, tree leaves and barks.

“The statistics made us come up with these re-usable pads which the girls can wear and wash and wear again and again,” Wall said. “These pads can be worn for more than a year and this will save a lot of money for the disadvantaged.”

Wall said the pads, which cost $10 per each pack of five, had the capacity to at least 30ml of water.

Speaking at the same event, PHND co-founder Norma Ndove said the product was sustainable and could be a panacea to some reproductive health challenges faced by most underprivileged girls, especially in rural areas.
