Mugabe out of touch: Chamisa

KUWADZANA East MP Nelson Chamisa yesterday accused President Robert Mugabe of losing touch with the country’s dire economic situation and quizzed Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa why the Zanu PF leader uttered statements contradicting the reality on the ground.

EVERSON MUSHAVA

Mugabe on Sunday told delegates at the 2014 President’s Medal Shoot Competition prize-giving ceremony in Harare that the economy was on a recovery path, courtesy of interventions by his government.

“When the President said the economy was recovering, I just want to know what is it that he is seeing that we are not seeing?” Chamisa asked. “Maybe as government ministers, you live in your own world that we are not living in.”

But Chinamasa accused Chamisa of being ill-informed about developments in the country.

He claimed that the country had realised reasonable economic growth in recent times.

Chinamasa said he would not disclose all the measures the Zanu PF government had employed to revive the economy as it would result in counter-action from countries that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe.

“I am shocked when people like Chamisa do not understand what is happening in the country,” he said.

The Zanu PF minister said Mugabe made the remarks on sound footing because he was aware of all the developments in the country through his regular interaction with Cabinet ministers.

He, however, admitted that industry had “virtually collapsed, but would for sure resurrect in the near future”.

Zimbabwe is currently facing a serious economic meltdown fuelled by severe liquidity challenges.

Companies are closing down and government is struggling to pay its workers.

Economists and Mugabe’s political enemies have accused the government of being clueless and is failing to fix the free-falling economy.

Mabvuku-Tafara MP James Maridadi also quizzed Transport minister Obert Mpofu on his appointment of Goodwill Masimirembwa as the new board chairman for the Central Mechanical Equipment Department after previously appointing him to head several other parastatals in other ministries the Umguza MP has headed.

Mpofu said he had no apology to make over Masimirembwa’s appointments.

  2. Chamisa is living in Zimbabwe and is seeing the reality on the ground. Mugabe is always under serious security he is made to believe that people in Zimbabwe are all enemies. His security for real will not want him to know the truth. His ministers are feeding him with false information. In Zimbabwe when Agriculture and Industry is not performing it means we have a serious problem. You don’t need to be economist to understand how bad the economy is. It is very clear. It’s only they can not admit that they have failed.

  3. How can we ever expect to be taken seriously by anyone out there when we keep flipflopping with our statements? How long has Chinamasa been admitting that our economic state is very bad, how many trips has he made to China and other countries with a begging bowl only to come back empty handed? And then today because he feels duty bound to defend to defend his out of touch with reality leader at whatever cost, he thinks we are so shallow as to believe him when he says the economy is improving. Can he start by telling us why Civil servants’ pay dates are not fixed anymore, why hospitals are operating at below 40% because of drug shortages and why he recently complained about the US Dollar damaging our economy. The arrogance that the likes of Chinamasa, Chombo and Mpofu are showing us is just too much to bear.

    1. @Dr Know, On a return trip From China, a huge official entourage was at Beijing Airport to receive non-other than David Cameroon! Of-course he had gone to see the Great Wall….just a thought.

    2. yu are very correct these guys are very arrogant.they are windowdressing the real situation bedevelling us as zimbabweans. They are fact cats.

  4. It is tru that companies are shutting down. Yet it is also tru that the management at the same companies are buying expensive cars for themselves. Wat is rily happening in Zim?

    1. That is Zimbabwe. Me myself I comes first, then my children and may be wife and/or small house. The rest don’t matter! You just use them as a means to get what YOU want.

  5. Mr Chinamasa arrogance won’t take you anywhere! You’re the one who used to arrogantly accuse Biti and the MDC of failing deliver during the GNU. You were angling for the Finance post thinking that the Chidzwa money would flow into the national coffers. Now you realise that the Chinese diamond miners won’t play ball but you fail to tame your arrogance. It’s not virtue. Remain in cloud cuckoo land with your master but you are doing disservice to the country and damaging your posterity if you ever have any.

What can you expect from a 90 year old? It’s surprising that he is even managing to walk without a walking stick. As one reaches such an age one automatically enters into one’s second childhood. It’s nature. We can do ourselves a favour by crafting a new paradigm for Zimbabwe and ignore the utterances of doddering old men!

We are well off topic, but I can’t help doing the Maths. He was 67 when he had an affair with a 24 year old married girl, culminating in a child outside wedlock. Eish!!! Then he has the nerve to preach morals to us.

    2. DEFINITELY THERE IS NEED TO PLAN FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT,tHERE IS LIFE ATFTER DEATH,God promissed us,i believe.

These ministers who are saying the economy is recovering must first visit the industrial areas and see for themselves. If it is recovering, why is it that, Zimra is planning to tax vendors? Imagine vendors being taxed.

    1. maVendors iwayo ndiyo industry yacho Hanana imwe ichapfuura ipapo.
The problem is that our leaders did not evolve from families in touch with modern ways. They know nothing other than what they read in books and saw at western airports.

I think Honorable Chamisa himself is out of touch with reality. How can a learned person like Chamisa expect a geriatric like Mugabe to be in touch with reality? Chamisa is like a hunter who is wasting his ammunition on an animal which was killed years ago. Everyone in Zimbabwe knows Mugabe is now ‘9 years old’ according to his own words; and which 9-year old can understand economic policy and how economics work?

So, Chamisa must get back to reality and stop wasting taxpayers’ money by speaking out of topic in parliament.

  9. There must be another Zimbabwe somewhere, l’ve been googling since Sunday but so far the only Zim l can find is the poor one

  10. yes chinamasa zim will one day come right, but let me bet my last dolla, not when robert is still alive or is in power. we all in zim are only hopeful in that that day will come and that gives us hope. we are all including you waiting for that day and in our hearts of hearts we know that thats when things will come right. of course we are hoping that when that happens he would have not put in place people who will do things exactly like him becoz all of us will be happy to forget about him forever when he goes. i hope none of our money soon will have his head since i think you chinamasa and rbz people are thinking of doing that when the zim dolla comes back.

  11. Unfortunately little Nelson thinks he is still in the SRC. Reality is people, we are under sanctions, like it or not and until the results of innovations and circumvention of ZDERA begin to show, all economic activity will remain suppressed. The MDC called for sanctions and celebrated their extension, lobbied for harsher restrictions, begged for stiffer measures, now they bemoan their effects. Hatina hedu kudzidza asi izvi hazvidi grade 7. Ndosaka takaisa bhora mugedhi. The more we suffer for rejecting Western Imperialism the more ZPF we will vote, Chinjai Maitiro vakomana.
