Chamisa denies eyeing top post

MDC-T national organising secretary Nelson Chamisa yesterday scoffed at reports that he had firmly set his eyes on the secretary-general’s post  held by “axed” Tendai Biti who is now fronting the Renewal Team.

Although party sources yesterday insisted that the youthful Kuwadzana East MP had already started campaigning for the post, Chamisa denied the charges and accused his political detractors of circulating the falsehoods to soil his image.

“It has never crossed my mind at all, but it has only crossed my eyes through what I see in the newspapers. A struggle is not defined by positions, but proposition of the collective,” Chamisa said.

He, however, refused to disclose which post he would contest at the forthcoming elective congress slated for October this year. A top MDC-T executive who declined to be named said Chamisa had declared interest in succeeding Biti, but chose to play his cards close to the chest in order to weigh his chances before throwing his hat into the ring.

“He believes that he will do the same trick he used at the last congress where he only made his intentions known at the last minute. This time he wants to be secretary-general,” the source said.

This came at a time when some Bulawayo-based MDC-T founders calling themselves MDC-T Veterans Association have vowed to de-campaign Chamisa at the congress for being “divisive and disrespectful” to them.

Chamisa landed the organising secretary’s post at the 2011 elective congress after he ghosted in from the blind side and shocked Elias Mudzuri with an emphatic victory.

Party insiders also claimed that Chamisa, who is believed to be MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s blue-eyed-boy, played a key role in fomenting the fallout between Tsvangirai and Biti in order to elevate himself to the key position.
