National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, which happened near Bubi River at around 3am, killing 14 people on the spot while two others died later.

“Circumstances are that a South African-registered truck was travelling towards Masvingo from Beitbridge when it had a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter [bus] which was heading towards Beitbridge from Masvingo,” Phiri said.

Nyathi said the bus had 28 people on board while the Hino truck had three.

“Fourteen people from the Mercedes Benz Sprinter, including the driver, died on the spot while another person died on admission to Neshuro Hospital and the other died on the way to Bulawayo,” Nyathi said.

“Eleven people were seriously injured and are currently admitted at Beitbridge Hospital.”

Nyathi appealed to motorists to exercise caution on the road and avoid driving at night when feeling sleepy and tired.

He said police were still conducting investigations into the cause of the accident. But sources at the crash site claimed that the truck encroached into the right lane, resulting in the collision.
