A CHITUNGWIZA police officer lost household property worth $3 790 to fire and $1 500 cash she had entrusted with a self-proclaimed prophetess.

The self-proclaimed prophetess, Nyarai Marisa (31) of Unit M in Seke, appeared in court on Wednesday before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo to answer charges of malicious damage to property and theft of trust property. She was remanded to July 30 on $100 bail.
The circumstances of the matter are that sometime in November 2013, Marisa “prophesied” to the complainant Chingasiyeyi Munemo, who is her best friend, that she must give her some money.
The accused said the money would be sufficient to buy a car for the accused after three months.
Marisa told the complainant that it was an instruction from God that she surrendered the money.
Munemo agreed as she is a congregant of Marisa’s church.
The court heard that Munemo gave the accused $1 500.

After receiving the money, the accused reportedly wrapped the money with a white cloth, put a R5 coin together with the money and left the cloth in the complainant’s house in Unit M and instructed her not touch it.
Marisa told the complainant that she would purchase the car within three months.
Further allegations are that on March 1 this year at around 1200hrs after the prophecy was not fulfilled, Marisa allegedly destroyed the complainant’s house by fire to make it look as if the money was destroyed by the fire.
The accused was, however, seen by one Ellen Madamombe coming from the complainant’s house a few minutes before the fire started. The accused failed to return the money claiming it was destroyed in the fire which reportedly started at the spot where the money was kept. Property worth $3 790 was also destroyed.
Phillip Hamunakwadi of Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers represented the accused while Norman Koropi appeared for the State.
